Presidential Fitness Program
Celebrating the Legacy of the Presidential Fitness Program
For generations of American students, the Presidential Fitness Program was a fun and motivating part of growing up—a chance to challenge themselves, set goals, and celebrate physical activity. Launched in 1966 and inspired by earlier initiatives from President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the program aimed to promote health and fitness among the nation’s youth at a time when staying active was becoming more important than ever.
The program featured a series of physical activities—like sit-ups, push-ups, a shuttle run, and the classic mile run—designed to measure strength, endurance, flexibility, and agility. Students who excelled earned the prestigious Presidential Physical Fitness Award, a symbol of their dedication and effort. These awards became cherished badges of honor and pride in schools across the country.
More than just a fitness test, the Presidential Fitness Program helped introduce millions of kids to the importance of regular physical activity and personal goal-setting. It created an early awareness of how movement and health go hand in hand—values that many carried into adulthood.
At Anastasia Fitness, we are in our third year of offering the Presidential Fitness Training Program for ages 7 through 14. Recess and free play are less frequent. We recognize the need to challenge kids with the basic tenets of physical conditioning. Sessions are small, only 10 per group, and divided by age and ability.
For homeschoolers, check the PEP Scholarship and Step Up For Students for reimbursement for your kid's registration!
The Presidential Fitness Program lives on as a potent reminder that celebrating effort, movement, and healthy habits can inspire a lifetime of wellness and confidence. Check out the Youth Training page for details.
